Milestones and Accomplishments 1982-2003

  • With support of 45,000 NPF and National Peace Academy members, and petition signators, successfully lobbied for the creation of the United States Institute for Peace (1982-1984)
  • Acted as secretariat and organizing body for the Alliance for Our Common Future, made up of nearly 80 peace, disarmament, social justice, and environmental groups. (1989-1993)
  • Created conflict resolution training programs in universities in Nicaragua and El Salvador (1990-1992)
  • Assisted in the creation of the Russian-American Program of Conflict Resolution at the St. Petersburg University in the Russian Federation. (1991)
  • Sent observers to the first democratic elections -- after the Cold War ended -- in Georgia and Armenia. ((1991)
  • Trained over 300 students in conflict management and shared decision making in the South Caucasus republics. (1991-2001)
  • Created the Russian Women's Civic and Political forums throughout the Russian Federation, a nationwide network working to retrain displaced workers and involve disenfranchised citizens in the political process in that country. (1991-Present)
  • Trained scores of teachers and thousands of students in conflict resolution and peer mediation skills in DC schools and throughout the United States. (1991-Present)
  • Helped forge links between the U.S. Department of Justice and Education and NGOs working on conflict resolution programs in schools (1993-1999)
  • Created the Transcaucasus Women's Dialogue our of which grew a handful of NGOs dedicated to conflict resolution, assisting victims of war and refugees, and improving the environment. (1994-2000)
  • Assisted the United Nations Development Fund for Women in creating the "South Caucasus' Women for Conflict Resolution" funded in 2000 by UN Foundation at $1.4 million.
  • Helped establish the Applied Conflict Resolution Organization Network (ACRON) to enhance communication and cooperation among all major U.S. organizations in the field. (1999-present)
  • Joined in supporting legislation to create a U.S. Department of Peace (2001-Present)
