Peacebuilders Reception
Monday, December 8, 2008
(Peace Mural Foundation)The NPF Peacebuilders Reception showcases Peace Quilts, by artist Carol Hiltner. These quilts were Ms. Hiltner’s response to the overarching threat of nuclear annihilation felt the world over in the 1980s. Stitched initially as a means to ease the fear felt by school children in America and the former Soviet Union, they became an instrument for peace as both American and Soviet leaders lent their signatures to Carol’s work. As a result, this unique exchange of goodwill during tense times makes the Peace Quilts a fascinating piece of history.
The National Peace Foundation is an international non-governmental organization. Our mission is to build a more secure, healthy and peaceful society by creating, educating and supporting an international community of citizen peace builders. We celebrate our past; over twenty five years of active participation and leadership in key peace movements; citizen diplomacy, conflict resolution and the establishment of the U.S Institute for Peace.
